The right package for what ? Modern or ww2 ?
For modern stuff it really depends what your into (I mean there is modern modern like F-16, F-18, JF-17, etc.) and Cold War era stuff (MiG-21, F-14, MiG-19, F-5E, AJS-37 Viggen). For that all you need is a module. And if you're really into it a map, Id recommend Persian Gulf because so far its the very best of all the DCS maps.
But since Caucasus is most popular online, its not needed. As I said, one module is all you need. Of course with more modern aircraft there is some complexity involved, i.e. you will have to spend some time learning systems and reading manuals.
When it comes to ww2 its fairly simple (especially with current discount):
1. Map
https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/ ... y_terrain/
2. Asset pack
https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/ ... sets_pack/
3. Favorite warbird. With that I cannot help, you got to choose which one is your favorite. FW-190 A-8 is the newest one and visuals are great, but its an underdog in the world of K-4s and D-9s. I never fly it alone. On the Allied side P-47 is expected to come soon.

Ups, almost forgot. If you want some single player experience you might also consider campaign:

Reflected makes really wonderful ww2 campaigns imo.

Tested this week free Spitfire IX,
But this is complete different compared to other Flight-sims.
Taxi and take off is already a challenge

I'd start with P-51 and 190. They are easier to taxi and take-off.

During the free period in this summer I tried the Fw190a8 (what else ?
).
Every time I followed the instruction for pre-flight, the old 190, but to no avail, the plane started to go to the right whatever I did.
I turned out to be a bug in the steam version - when you tried to disconnect the land-power, it confirmed, but did not actually drop the connection, so I started to go in ever more tight circles of around the generator
switched away from steam, Bozon advised me to, but I have not bought any of the ww2 planes I'm interested in yet.
Bozon want the announced Mosquito fighter.
I really really hope the get the Bf109e and spitfire models for BOB.
